The best way for a photographer to show someone their work is by handing them a few prints. Failing physical proximity, you can put 'stuff' up on the internet. DeviantArt seems like a good place to do this. It seems to promote a mentality of images as a dosed amount of art as opposed to facebook-style spammery (no names, flickr).
At the time of writing, a quick estimation of the number of photos I've taken reveals that on average, I put up one photo on this site for every 161 photos I take/make. Editing is not easy, and I don't mean editing as understood by today's photoshop generation (me not excluded) but editing as understood by professional photographers. Examining contact sheets, digital or real, and making decisions about what's a keeper, what isn't, and most importantly, why. So what you see up here isn't a carefully selected portfolio of work. It's a selection of some of my better work for the purposes of the few people that still give a shit even when I can't physically hand them prints.
While I'd love to win a contest or get a daily deviation or be featured or blown or whatever, that won't really change the exposure that my photography gets in real life.. crazy, eh? What else do you need to know about me? Oh yeah, Busker By Big Ben wasn't posed.
As a side note, deviantArt also seems to be a good place to peruse good photography. A lot of very talented people are putting their work up on here.
